Biden to talk strategy to counter cyberattacks

President Joe Biden will discuss his administration’s strategy to counter cyberattacks during a meeting with senior officials on Monday, the White House said, as the country faces a growing number of threats from ransomware gangs and other malicious actors.

The meeting comes as the United States has been hit by a wave of high-profile cyberattacks in recent months, including the Colonial Pipeline hack that led to gas shortages across the East Coast and the SolarWinds hack that compromised federal agencies and private companies.

Biden administration officials have said they are taking steps to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity, including increasing funding for cybersecurity programs, working with the private sector to improve cybersecurity practices, and developing new tools and technologies to detect and respond to cyberattacks.

The meeting on Monday will be attended by senior officials from the National Security Council, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Department of the Treasury.

The White House said that Biden will receive an update on the administration’s efforts to counter cyberattacks and discuss next steps.

Biden has made cybersecurity a top priority for his administration, and he has repeatedly called for a whole-of-government approach to countering cyber threats.

In May, Biden signed an executive order on cybersecurity that called for a number of steps to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity, including:

* Improving information sharing between the government and the private sector
* Investing in research and development of new cybersecurity technologies
* Strengthening the cybersecurity workforce
* Holding foreign actors accountable for malicious cyber activities

The White House said that the meeting on Monday will be an opportunity for Biden to review the progress that has been made on cybersecurity and to discuss next steps.
