June Retail Sales Up, but Underlying Trend Remains Soft

Canada’s retail sales edged up in June as auto sales rebounded, although the underlying trend remained weak, data from Statistics Canada showed on Tuesday.Headline retail sales increased 0.6% in June from May, buoyed by a 3.0% gain in sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, following a 3.0% decline in May, Statistics Canada said.Sales in other sectors were mixed. Sales at furniture and home furnishings stores rose 1.3%, while sales at food and beverage stores decreased 0.4%. Clothing and accessories stores saw a modest 0.1% increase in sales, following a 0.9% gain in May.In volume terms, retail sales were up 0.5% in June. Retail sales in June were 5.8% above the pre-pandemic level of February 2020. Core retail sales, which exclude sales at gasoline stations and motor vehicle and parts dealers, rose 0.3% in June, after increasing 0.6% in May.Economists had forecast a 0.5% increase in headline retail sales in June. .
