Canadian retail sales edged up 0.1% in June compared with May, boosted by a gain in auto sales, but the broader trend remains weak amid an elevated inflation environment, data from Statistics Canada showed on Friday.
Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers jumped 2.0%, the biggest gain among the major subsectors, while sales at gasoline stations climbed 3.2%.
Excluding autos, retail sales were down 0.3% in June, the largest monthly decline since January 2022.
Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline and motor vehicles and parts dealers, fell 0.5% in June, the first decline since January 2022.
