Rachel Zegler seems to be going the theme-dressing route for promoting The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Remember the glamorous black dresses worn by Zoë Kravitz, who channeled Catwoman during red carpets for screenings of Batman? Or, more recently, Margot Robbie’s fashion marathon, transforming herself into a life-size Barbie at various screenings around the world?
For the European premiere of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Zegler paid tribute—get it?—to the franchise’s original heroine, Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence.
The dress is a reference to the famous fiery look worn by Lawrence’s character in Catching Fire, the second film in the franchise. In the film, it’s designed for her by Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) as a reveal; it starts as a white wedding dress, but she spins to reveal the Mockingjay dress, a symbol of the rebellion.
One dress hides another, and the heroine spreads her wings. She then bursts into flames again on her float, when she parades alongside Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).
Ten years after the film’s release, Zegler is carrying on the fashion torch by bursting into flames in a black mermaid dress with a flared hem. The gown is from the latest collection by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and, officially, the bottom of the black dress is meant to represent the structure of a red orchid. Keen observers also noticed that the actor—who plays the saga’s new heroine, Lucy Gray—was wearing a thin gold ring in the shape of a snake, in reference to the film’s title.

Costar Hunter Schafer also appeared on the red carpet, radiant in a painted-on Schiaparelli gown from Daniel Roseberry’s latest haute couture collection.
