PARIS, March 15 (Reuters) – France’s lower house of parliament gave its final approval on Tuesday to a bill banning the use of excessively thin models in the fashion industry in what campaigners hail as a victory in the fight against anorexia. Lawmakers voted 84-2 in favor of the new legislation, which includes measures such as compulsory medical certificates for models and fines for companies that fail to ensure their employees are healthy. The bill defines excessive thinness as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 18.5. The average BMI in France is 24.9.
