Google Puts More Content Controls in Users’ Hands

Google announced a suite of updates Thursday that give users more ways to control the content they see in Search, Maps, YouTube, and other services. With more than 70 billion daily queries on Search alone, the tech giant wants to make it easier for people to find what they’re looking for, whether it’s a specific piece of information or something tailored to their interests. Here’s an overview of the new features people will start to see in the coming weeks:

**Search**

* **The ‘About this Result’ feature:** To help people evaluate the content they see, the company is rolling out an ‘About this Result’ panel in Search. The feature will provide information about the website or source of the result, such as when it was created, whether it’s commonly cited by other sources, and if Google has identified any concerning content. It will initially be available for English-language results globally and expand to more languages soon.
* **Expanded fact check information:** Google will now show a more detailed view of fact checks in the ‘Fact Check’ label that appears directly beneath search results. This will be available in more countries, including the US, UK, Australia, India, and Brazil.
* **A new way to refine results:** Google is introducing a new control that lets users refine their search results by topic. They can choose to see more or fewer results on specific topics, like news, videos, or images, by clicking the ‘Show more’ or ‘Show less’ options in the search results page.

**Maps**

* **Customizable maps:** Google Maps will soon let users create and share custom maps with personalized information, such as favorite places, travel plans, and event details. These maps can be shared with others through a link and can be edited collaboratively.
* **A more immersive view:** Google is bringing its immersive view feature, which combines Street View and aerial imagery to create a 3D-like experience, to more cities worldwide. People will be able to explore landmarks, businesses, and neighborhoods in a more realistic and interactive way.

**YouTube**

* **A more personalized home feed:** YouTube will give users more control over the videos they see in their home feed by introducing a new ‘Explore’ page. The page will feature recommendations based on users’ interests and viewing history, making it easier for them to discover new content they might enjoy.
* **New parental control options:** YouTube Kids will offer new parental control options to help parents manage their children’s viewing experience. They will be able to choose the types of content their kids can watch, set time limits, and block specific channels or videos.

**Other updates**

* **Personalized news feed:** Google News will soon offer a personalized feed of news stories based on users’ interests and reading history. This will make it easier for people to stay informed about topics that matter to them.
* **Improved spam detection:** Google is improving its spam detection capabilities across all its services to protect users from malicious content. This includes new measures to identify and remove spammy websites, videos, and other content.

These updates are part of Google’s ongoing effort to give users more control over their digital experience. The company is committed to providing users with the tools they need to find the information they need, stay informed, and enjoy the content they love.
