The Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based company did not say how many local employees were affected, but did note that the cuts were a result of current financial and sales challenges.

“We continue to operate in a very challenging environment, and we must focus on controlling costs as we continue to execute our Full Potential plan,” said Hanesbrands, in a media statement.

“As a result, we made the difficult decision to eliminate a number of positions across our company. These are valued associates, and we thank them for their many contributions to Hanesbrands.”

Earlier this month, Hanesbrands said it expects to report fourth-quarter net sales slightly above the top end of its outlook range and adjusted operating profit at the midpoint of the range. Its fourth-quarter financial guidance included sales in a range of $1.4 billion to $1.45 billion and adjusted earnings in a range of 4 cents to 11 cents.

That announcement coincided with news of the resignation of its chief financial officer, effective February 28. Scott Lewis, the company’s chief accounting officer and controller is now interim chief financial officer until a successor is named.

The company is scheduled to report full fourth-quarter results on February 2.
