Elle and Dakota Fanning Have Two Very Different Takes on Sexy Spring Style

Dakota and Elle Fanning might have very different personal styles, but they share the same stylist, Samantha McMillen. Last night they celebrated her at the Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo Power Stylists Dinner, as McMillen was named one of the 25 most powerful stylists of the year, for her work with Ana de Armas and others. Since the whole focus of the event was styling, it’s not surprising that the sisters used it as an opportunity to push a more directional aesthetic in contrasting—but equally fashion-forward—looks.

Dakota wore a red minidress from Loewe’s spring-summer 2023 collection, which had the emblem of the collection, an obviously fake anthurium, contorted around the body—with the stem of the flower draped over the shoulder and the head acting as a bra. Jonathan Anderson’s unique floral detail has been seen on countless cool girls in recent months, from Zendaya to Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner.

Elle, meanwhile, explored the notion of “sexy” in a less overt way, wearing a pair of slouchy pinstripe tailored trousers with a matching cropped waistcoat as a top. The trousers have a relatively low waistband, adding a aughts edge to the look from Stella McCartney’s autumn-winter 2023 collection, unveiled in Paris just a few weeks ago.

McMillen has been working with the sisters for over a decade. It all started when she dressed Dakota in Louis Vuitton for the 2012 Met Gala and then six months later worked on a press tour wardrobe for Elle. “They’re so different. They’re sisters, but I just look at them as different clients,” McMillen said to Teen Vogue back in 2016. “There are similarities in the attention to detail and the way that they plan for things. They both really love fashion and really go for it, which is really nice. I just have a lot of fun working with them.”
