Plus-Size Shoppers Can Never Win Fashion’s Sustainability Game

The first time Monique Black caved to the whims of the fashion industry and how it hates plus-size people, she went to the mall to try on a pair of Victoria’s Secret Pink yoga pants. She was in high school, and the flared style, with its glitter waistband and heart-shaped dog logo, was the height of fashion. Black was size 10 or so—a far jump from that of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie and the waif-thin models she’d seen wearing the look. And though the pants didn’t fit her exactly the way they were supposed to, Black was thrilled. That was enough for now.
