Glamour Katie Holmes played with structure on a recent outing in New York City, pairing the classic shirtdress with a skirt that’s more fabric than garment.
Stepping out at the 92nd Street Y in support of her new film Rare Objects, the actor-director opted for a clean and crisp white button-down shirtdress that’s pinstriped on top, pleated on bottom…or possibly it’s a button-down and a not-attached white skirt? Jury’s still out.
On its own, that outfit would have been cute and sporty, if a little 2010s. But this is Katie Holmes we’re talking about. She’s gotta do something simple yet fashion-forward, untrendy, and unusual. So she wore a wraparound maxi skirt made of heavy material that’s pinned loosely in the front, leaving an intentional hole that gives us a peek at her skirt and thigh. And if the white garment is two pieces, that means she’s wearing two skirts. Like that time she carried two purses. Katie!!!

Rare Objects, Holmes’s third feature as a director, is something of a family project. Per , her 16-year-old daughter with Tom Cruise, Suri, sings for the film’s soundtrack, and the credits specify that the whole movie is dedicated to her. Holmes, our cover star, opened up about the decision to include her daughter in her work, revealing, “I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her…So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly. That’s how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she’s my heart.”
She also talked about her well-known street style, musing, “I enjoy [fashion]. I mean, I enjoy the craftsmanship. I enjoy putting things together. And I work with [stylist] Brie Welch, and she’s very detail oriented, and that inspires me. I think it is very creative. I love vintage shopping. I love the art of design.” We can tell.
